PREPARING for a fruitful night’s beauty sleep starts long before your head hits the pillow, advises a pharmacist.
In fact, if you establish solid pre-sleep rituals, she believes you can wake up looking a few years younger.
Beauty sleep can be aided by a multitude of oral hygiene, skin and hair care practices.
Fabulous spoke to Jana Abelovska, Superintendent Pharmacist at Click on Pharmacyon the best way to harness the regenerative power of your kip.
“A good night’s sleep will make you look and feel more refreshed in the morning, so the most important tip of all is to get enough sleep,” she says.
But that’s not all.

The type of pillow you use can keep your hair strong, while sleeping on your back can do wonders for facial wrinkles.
Here are pharmacist Jana’s top tips for getting the most effective beauty sleep of your life…
The Mané Event
Just like our skin, our hair can suffer the impacts of aging.
As women age, our hair can become coarser, dry or brittle due to decreased oil production in the scalp.
What’s more, women’s estrogen levels decrease (especially during and after menopause), which helps maintain hair thickness, often causing thinner hair.
As a result, our hair can age unnecessarily.
To protect your hair while you sleep and give it the best chance of rejuvenation, Jana encouraged people to never sleep with damp locks.
“Your hair becomes more fragile before it dries,” she explains. “Lying on it – and moving around in your sleep – can damage it.
“Feeling stressed has also been linked to increased hair loss.
“This is yet another way a relaxing nighttime routine is good for you — it can help protect your hair.”
Skipping a 10-minute blow dry before bed just isn’t worth it in the long run.
How does beauty sleep work?
We’ve all heard about beauty sleep, but what actually happens while we get good quality Zs that make us look more beautiful?
- Improved blood flow
During sleep, blood flow to the skin increases. Provides essential nutrients and oxygen that help repair damage caused by UV exposure and pollution. The result? A healthy glow - Cellular Regeneration
Skin cells regenerate faster while we sleep. The rate of cell renewal is highest at night, allowing the skin to eliminate dead cells and replace them with new, healthy ones. This improves skin texture and tone - Reduced cortisol levels
Cortisol, a stress hormone, can break down collagen and contribute to wrinkle formation. Good quality sleep helps regulate cortisol levels, thus reducing its negative impact on the skin - Hydration Station
The skin loses more water during the day than at night because sleep helps the skin retain moisture. Well-hydrated skin appears plumper and less prone to wrinkles - Growth hormones
During deep sleep, the body releases growth hormones, which play a key role in tissue growth and repair. These hormones help the skin recover from damage suffered and support the formation of new cells
Counting sheep
It’s age-old advice for a reason: getting enough sleep is the secret to getting beauty sleep.
Jana seriously recommends getting about eight hours a night to give your cells time to repair and rejuvenate.
“Some people say sleeping on your back is better for reducing wrinkles, but doctors have proven that sleeping on your side has some health benefits,” she adds.

Because retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays, it’s important to only apply it close to bedtime, says Jana.
Sunset in August is around 8:30 pm, so a good time to aim is 9 pm.
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, provides chemical exfoliation to the skin and accelerates cell production, resulting in a more youthful complexion over time.
What is Retinol?
Retinol is a buzzword in the beauty industry these days…
Retinol is a chemical exfoliant that belongs to the retinoid family, a group of compounds derived from vitamin A.
Promotes the elimination of dead and old skin cells and the production of new, healthy cells. This process helps keep the skin smooth and shiny, improving texture and tone.
By accelerating cell turnover, retinol also helps unclog pores, making it an effective acne treatment.
Regular use of retinol can significantly improve the overall texture and tone of your skin. It can minimize the appearance of pores, smooth rough patches, and even out pigmentation.
Retinol also helps fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation by accelerating the renewal of pigmented cells and promoting the growth of new, evenly pigmented cells.
“The best time to wash your face at night depends on many factors,” explains Jana.
“This includes what is most comfortable for you in terms of building a relaxing nighttime routine.
“Another factor is the products you choose to use.
“Dermatologists often advise using retinol close to bedtime, as exposure to light can reduce its effectiveness.”
TikTok Wrinkle Destroyer
Jana also shared that there’s “no harm” in trying out the facial recording trend that’s making the rounds on TikTok right now.
Some content creators believe it has the power to take decades off your face while you count Zs.
Special adhesive tapes, often made from medical-grade materials, are stuck between the eyebrows, forehead and over the jowls as part of this beauty routine.
The tape slightly stretches the skin and holds it in place, restricting movement in that area.
The goal is to avoid repetitive facial expressions, such as frowning or squinting, which can contribute to the formation of wrinkles.
“Facial or wrinkle etching is a popular trend right now,” says Jana.
“If you have a big day ahead of you and want to try something new, there’s no harm in experimenting and seeing if it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines in the morning.
“Just make sure you use a product that’s actually meant for skin care—those little patches should be gentle on your face.
“Although there are many clips circulating on TikTok showing people using regular tape, it is not formulated for use on your skin and can hurt you when removing it.”
