A man has been charged with attempted murder after a police officer was stabbed at a maximum security prison in Durham.
David Taylor, 62, was charged on Thursday after an on-duty Greater Manchester Police detective was stabbed in the chest on July 23 at HMP Frankland.
The officer suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
He was later discharged and is now recovering at home.
Taylor, a former resident of Willington, County Durham, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on September 3.

Frankland prison is a category A prison and houses more than 800 men.
Those arrested are believed to include Wayne Couzens, a former Met police officer who kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah Everard in 2022, and double murderer and necrophiliac David Fuller.
