Spotify will begin showing in-app pricing information to iPhone users in the European Union starting today, following a years-long legal battle against Apple. In an update to an old blog postSpotify says iPhone users in the EU will now see things like promotional offers and pricing information for each subscription level – including how much a plan costs when the promotion ends.
One thing it’s missing is the ability to click a link to make purchases outside of the Apple App Store. Spotify says it is opting for “right to music streaming services” which Apple filed after receiving a €1.84 billion (about $2 billion) EU antitrust fine in March for “abusing its dominant position” in music streaming rather than accept the complicated new terms for developers that Apple outlined last week. Unlike the right, the latter would allow EU developers to link to external payment options, with Apple receiving a cut of off-platform sales. Spotify clearly doesn’t want to do this, saying Apple is demanding “illegal and predatory taxes.”
