A mum has revealed the perfect trick for taking photos on iPhones: ditching the self-timer.
She regretted wasting so much time “running back and forth with the damn timer.”
Kallie Branciforte — also known as “that handy mom” on TikTok — spent less than a minute updating her iPhone settings.
“Are you telling me I’ve been running around looking for a timer when I could have been doing this the whole time?” she joked.
“OK, parents, I just learned a new iPhone camera hack that you’re going to want to know about, and it’s how to use a voice command to take photos.”
She advised iPhone users to go to their device’s settings and then tap “accessibility.”
The next step is to press the voice control button.
“Make sure in this section that you have set up voice command – with the voice control option turned on,” Branciforte added.
“If it’s not, it won’t work.”
The next step is to create a new command.

In the “phrase” section, you can type what you want to record – this is the phrase you will say to turn on your iPhone camera when needed.
Then in the app, scroll down to the camera option and under the “action” section, she advised doing this as a “perform custom gesture”.
And you then record your custom gesture – “in this case, it’s where you tap where the camera shutter button is located.
“So you have to tap a few times where the camera button normally is.”
iPhone Tricks to Try Today
Here are some of the best…
- Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the spacebar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, allowing you to move words and sentences more easily
- Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and press close all tabs
- Delete many photos quickly – Long press a photo and drag your finger diagonally across Photos to select multiple images at once and click delete
- Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of the home screen, tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
- Check if you need a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally, a battery is considered exhausted when its capacity is reduced to 80%. If it’s below, you can buy a battery change from Apple
- Move apps faster – Hold an app until it starts to jiggle, then (while holding) tap other apps, making them stack so you can move them more easily
This gesture will activate burst mode on your iPhone’s camera.
You want your custom voice command to trigger the capture of a few photos, rather than just one – hence the burst mode option.
Make sure to tap “back” and save.
MAGICAL WORLD
Once complete, there is no need for self-timers, just set up the perfect photo pose and “say your magic word”.
Your iPhone will do the rest.
“Make sure your voice control is on,” the mother repeated.
Also make sure your camera is open when using the command – it’s only set to the camera app.
“Keep in mind that – when you’re out and about – you’ll need to say this word or phrase loud enough for your iPhone to hear it, so we advise against choosing something embarrassing,” he said. Technological radar.
“When you open the camera app and say the phrase of your choice, your iPhone automatically shoots a burst of photos.
“You’ll still only have a second of time between saying your line and the photos being taken, but at least you’ll have all the time in the world to properly frame yourself in front of the camera.”
